Default My CJ is Eating Alternator Belts.

Need some help here; my Jeep is eating alternator belts. Specifics: '83 CJ-7 with an AMC 304 (1978).

The belts run for anywhere from 150-300 miles and then something is binding up and the belt stops spinning. Then the belt will actually break in two. Is doesn't shread, just snaps; almost like it was cut in half.

The alternator spins freely and is putting out 14V. I've checked to see if the belts are alligned as closely as I can with my "calibrated eye".

Any suggestions?? I'm getting to be a pro at changing alternator belts!

Is this the alt/water pump/crank belt? If so check the water pump closely, I have seen water pumps lock up and then turn loose when the pressure is let off the belt.

I know this is probably silly, but if it has Air Cond check the compressor and make sure it is not locked up. Silly, why have air if you do not have a top.
I'm Mike, make sure you spell it right, because I do not want to get the wrong A$$hole in trouble.

If you do not have time to do it right the first time, how do you have time do do it over?

Mike: No AC compressor installed. But I am thinking of putting one on and moding it to make an on board air system

I've seen alt berings lock up too. Also my XJ sucked up a rock into the fan blades of the alt and locked it up. (of course this happened when the wife was driving and I was deployed lol) Everyone though it was on fire with all the smoke rollin out from under the hood.
