From the ratio you chose, you would be running 37-39 inch tires? I would strongly discourage you from running that with a D30. I would highly recommend running a D44 in the front with tires that large. If you throw the locker in that equation, the D30 just won't hold up.

Save you pennys for a better axle, maybe a 3/4 ton 44 or since you are upgradeing once might as well do it right the first time and go D60's, even the 3/4 ton 44 is only recomended for 37" tires.

Blackbetty I agree that it sounds like you are asking for trouble, unless the reason you are running 5.13's is you have a 4 cyl under the hood and only running 35" tires? A locked front Dana 30 with 37" tires or larger, you will be wheeling on borrowed time. You mention upgrading the shafts...so are you building a Super 30? The stronger shafts may survive, but it is the outers that concern me with that much mechanical advantage and little u-joints

5.13's in a D30 with any size tires is asking for Ring gear breakage. Don't go any steeper than 4.56

He does have a 4-banger, and I think he is planning on running 35"s, but wouldn't the pinion be like a metal toothpick? I have 4.88 for a D30, and the pinion on that isn't the largest thing I have seen. 5.13 for a D30 would be tiny, right?

I am running 4.88s and a lockrite in my D30 right now. I have a 4 cyl and 33s. I got a good deal on the D30, which was already setup for me. When I get the money together, a D44 will be going in for sure.
