    That's some scary sh!t.

We had a guy in our club that had a tow strap break his windshield because of fraying. It was just the strap, we won't allow straps with hooks.

That is the reason we all should be using straps with no metal hooks or eyes. I read that it broke away from the frame, maybe I'm seeing the shackle under the tire?

    Drivers head couldov been exploded.

    Army Dead weight...

This is exactly why we're taught to put something heavy across the line in the middle, so when one end comes looses, it directs the force down and helps disrupt the force that tends to send the strap up and through the vehicle.

Even a strap without a hook can kill someone if it hits them directly. It's just as much a real threat as accidently rolling off a cliff and getting killed. The dead weight doesn't always keep the strap from doing damage, but it actually reduces the chances of injury significantly, and I know at least one manufacturer (I believe it's Warn, but not certain) makes a weighting sack that loops over winch cables and tow straps just for the purpose, but running it through the straps of a tool bag or even a heavy coat can reduce fly away risk significantly.

Now that I think about it, that weighting bag was spotlighted in one of the magazines I read about 4 months ago.

Damn. That reminds me of a story someone posted a while back where a guy was killed when a recovery went bad and a line that was connected to a jeep where the point was "rigged" rather than put on correctly broke away. Horrible accidents that can be stopped with a little common sense.
