By "smaller" do you mean the circumference of the shaft or the length?
I have a 1990 YJ and installed the rough country 6" lift on it last night, I also ordered a new SYE, and a Tom Woods DS. After installation of the 6" lift we took the Transfer Case out and took apart to install new SYE. after we had the thing completely apart we noticed that the main spline shaft that was to be replaced was considerably smaller than the new one.. We double checked the serial numbers on the box and checked the order also. (this was the SYE from Rough Country that the Tech said was the correct one.) The numbers say its the right one. But something is not right ??? I have a NP231j on my jeep...and ordered the SYE 87-93YJ...Any ideas ....are there different 231's or did the RC send me the wrong stuff ???? any ideas would be big help.. I am currently driving w/o a rear drive shaft and had to reassemble my 231 and plug the end so no fluid leak and drive in 4wd for the time...
