    USAF Starting issues

Ok here we go again. As most of you know I recently got my XJ and built the engine. I have 2 small problems or atleast I hope they are small. One when I go to start it it takes a few tries before it cranks sometimes it starts right up other times it takes a few tries. I have even tried turning the key on to let the fuel pump run before I turn it over. The other problem is once in a while when I do get it started it makes a loud squeel some times it stops right away other times it lasts about 10-20 seconds or untill i rev the engine up. Any Ideas??

The squeal sounds like the belt slipping on the power steering pump pulley. Could either be the pump starting to lock up or belt tensioner is loose. As far as the starting problem: could be air filter, fuel filter, vacuum leak, timing. Too hard to tell without looking at it. Good luck.

Well I do need a new belt I got it running with the old crappy one and never did change it. So I will take care of that this weekend. I've set the timing twice and that is the only place it will run good at. havent detected any leaks has a new air filter but will also replace the fuel filter. Thank you.

My question is, Did you rebuild the engine - personally, or have a shop/friend do the rebuild? I'm curious on the verification of TDC at the completion on the build.

Did it myself. Not the first one I build either. Plus Im pretty good at following directions. So im pretty sure TDC is right and the Distributor on this thing has to be perfect or it wont start. 1 tooth before or after and it will not run and it cant be advanced or retarded.

    Default Crank Sensor

Does it have the 4.0 engine? I ran into the same problem when I rebuilt mine--only it wouldn't start at all.

Traced it to the crank sensor after buying a service manual. It installs into the bell housing inline with the flywheel. The catch is that it has to be VERY close to function correctly. The service manual has you put a self adhesive paper on the face and then install it right against the flywheel. When I did--VAROOM!

    Hope this helps--cheers.

When mine would had the long start problems, it turned out being the section of rubber hose on the fuel pump. It had a hole in it and the clamp wasn't on one side. I threw alot of money at it for 4 dollars in hose.
