    Default CB questions

i bought my jeep with a CB antenna already attatched and am thinking of finally getting a CB. I want to know the best quality CB i can get while staying budget concious. my buddy runs with a Uniden unit, and i was wondering if this is good advice. i want something that will give weather reports as well as be EXTREMELY easy to use and install. any help or links would be great. i want to spend less than 60 bucks or so.

I roll with a radio shack CB. It works great and has weather and emergency channels on it. Simple to use.

I like my cobra 75. It's the hand held unit. You can remove it and store it away when not using it. Has the weather channels. You might need an external speaker for using it on the highway, but those can be had for pretty cheap.

I have been researching CB's lately also. I ended up getting a used Cobra 25, I went off the advice of a trucker friend of mine. It doesn't have weather band but I got it off craigslist for $25 and it's only a year old. I'm getting excelent range off of a magnetic $10 Walmart antenna just make sure you antenna has a tuneable tip.

Uniden, Cobra, Radio Shack, are all good radios.

With CB's, like many things, you get what you pay for.

$60 will get you an OK radio, that will work for trail rides, etc.

Spending $90-$130 will get you a great radio, that will last you years.

Of course if you have a softtop/open top Jeep, and live/work in an area where it may be stolen, you may want a less expensive radio.

The cheaper the radio the more important the tune. A cheap radio with too high SWR and you will burn out your finals fast.

Go cheap on the radio, you will get more bang for your buck when spent on the antenna (which you don't have to do anyway...) Even with an expensive rig, you won't get much more than line of sight reception anyway. So you can reach someone far away by spending money on tires to get to the top of the mountain, more than you can by spending on the radio! It actually is hard to buy a radio today!! None of the car parts stores have them, only Radio Shack. If you can't find a RS, best bet is to go to the closest truck stop that has a shop for truckers, of just internet it. Channel "4" must be the Jeepers channel! All the clubs I know run 4, we run 4, with 23 as a alternate, when we run into radio traffic, which is almost always other Jeepers!

Get on the Interstate and head to the first truck stop and see what they have to offer. I have found they often have the best radios for the best prices and the bigger ones have some guy there who knows radios and and get get the antenna matched for you One other thing to consider is the radio I have seen in the Quadratec and 4WD catalog where all the controls are in the handset and you mount the radio under the seat or out sight...I have mine ziptied to the spreaders on my roll bar, but I need an external speaker to listen to it on the road so I only use it on the trail. Best thing I did was mount a firestick antenna on the rear bumper.
