    Default Chevy V8

Ok here it goes. I have been doing alot of surfing on the internet and this is what i have come up with. I am wanting to put a TBI small block chevy in my 84CJ. The only thing is that I want to put the M20 (H117) 4 spped transmission with the granny low in it, but while surfing I did not found anyone that hasdone it and I am pretty sure someone has. I am just wondering is it a hard transfer and not alot of people do it or am I just missing something.. I belive this would be an outstanding set up. I just dont want to have to do alot of chopping on th CJ if it is going to require it.

Any replys or ideas would be outstanding.. Thanks Jimmy

I'm not sure what the M20 tranny looks like (size, where the stick mounts, etc.)

But I can't see it being a problem.

I ran a 350 chev in my CJ, with an SR4 tranny and D300 Tcase, it fit with room to spare.

The only thing 'tight' was the HEI dizzy, so I moved the engine forward a couple inches. (still had plenty of room for the mechanical fan)

Not sure why there are no write ups, could be cost prohibitive? Lack of adapters?

They stick 302's, auto's, SM425's and T-18's in CJ's, I guy I know even stuck a 454 and a 4speed in his (way crazy) so I can't see any problems with what you want to do. (other than no one makes adapters?)

IIRC, an M20 is a 4 speed from a car isn't it? That might be why you aren't finding anyone who is using it in a 4wd. You could use it with a divorced t-case, but with a CJ-7 you won't have enough chassis length to fit everything without some stretch. For a good 4 speed tranny, I would recommend either an SM420 (7.02:1 granny) or an SM465 (6.0:1 granny) . Both were used in chevy 1/2ton-1 ton trucks so they will bolt up to a SBC without any special adaptors.

I have been running an SM420 for almost 2 years and IMO it was absolutely one of the best mods I've done to my jeep.

You are thinking of the Munci 2wd 4 speed.. In the years of 1980 to 2008 in the medium duty trucks they used this transmission. The name of it is the HM-117 also known as the M20. It has a 6.55 to 1 first gear. This came from the GM web site for the transmission Identification. The reason I am wanting to go this route is cause I belive if I use GM everything I can save money from buying all of the expensive adapters.

I know there is a local old guy that I can get an SM420 and SM465 for less than $200. Hell, I have an SM465, t-case and bellhousing sitting here in the shop taking up space.

Very true. That's why I'm going to a SBC in my Jeep. I was already running an SM420 behind m Jeep 4.0 with an expensive bellhousing and it broke. I'm going to all chevy driveline to avoid issues like this in the future.

Manual trannys suck offroad... Do you have 3 feet? If not, you may consider using an auto tranny.. Get a turbo 400 or turbo 350, they can be had pretty cheap, they are pretty strong. And adaptable to any t-case you wanna run.

That's what a hand throttle on the shifter is for.
