Yes, you can install the twin-stick setup without removing the tranny. I'm sending a link that will hopefully explain about modifiing the shifter rails.
It's a GREAT mod that will gain you the use of
2wd rear - hi range (I know you already use this one)
    2wd rear - low range
    2wd front - hi range
    2wd front - low range
    and you're usual 4wd patterns

You can buy a twin stick kit for the Dana 300 and it shouldn't matter what trans you have in front of it.

In order to use the front axle only in 'HI', you need to modify the shift rail, as described in the http://www.4x4wire.com/tech/dana300/#FWDHi link.

Very easy to do, I used that write up when I redid my D300. http://www.militaryjeepers.com/commu...read.php?t=276

I've had no problems, other than I wish I'd have made the sight tube a larger diameter When filling/refilling, it takes a while for the fluid to 'level out' in the sight tube, which can create an overfill problem. Simply fixed by either going slow while filling, or adding some, and running it a bit to warm up the oil, and checking the level.
