Default 4wd light and other things

i have a 05' TJ and its been in michigan its whole life so every winter you would have to use 4wd and no problems, it sat for a 1yr while i was deployed and when i got back i was doin some 2 track trails and wanted to put it in 4wd and the light didn't come on right away, but i kept going and it eventually came on and i was defiantly in 4wd. Well about a wk later i used it again and the light pretty much came on right away. its been about a month and i was wheelin and i know you can shift into 4wd at about 20, but i usually stop put it in nuetral and then shift into 4wd, but the other day i was going about 10 and was already in sugar sand and didnt want to stop so i shifted into 4hi and it felt like it locked but no light so i stopped and took off fast and it felt like it was in 4wd so i stopped again and shifted to 2wd and it was def. in 2wd so i shifted back into 4wd and kept going well it came to the end of the trail and i had to turn around so i turned kinda sharp and hit the gas and i felt a grinding in the front left?? sorry its long i wanted to be discriptive...

There is a transfer case position sensor on the NP231 t-case that makes the indicator light on the dash light up and show either 4hi or 4lo. From your description that sounds like a loose connection or malfunctuning sensor. There is a wireing harness on the drivers side of the t-case that splits in two and the top connector is attached to the transfer case position sensor and the bottom lower one is the output speed sensor connection. The sensor unscrews from the t-case. If you replace the sensor don't torque it more than 15-25 ft lbs.

Make sure the connection is tight first. Maybe you had a hit it or something when you were off-road.

    Just some thoughts.

my 4wd light doesn't come on at all. I'm still trying to figure out my 4wd, sometimes it goes into 4hi and sometimes it goes straight to neutral.

Do you have a t-case drop or a body lift? It sounds like your linkage needs to be adjusted. My 05 TJ did the same thing until I adjusted it and then switched to a SYE the next month. Crawl underneath and look and you will see how it works.

I have a body lift. I adjusted the linkage on my transfer case. Hopefully, tomorrow I can try it out. Can you replace the 4wd light or switch?
